It has been a moment, since the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, boldly stated on National Television, that foreigners who interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs, as well as in the 2019 general elections, would return back to their countries in “body bags”.
This comment caused nationwide, as well as worldwide outrage from very concerned citizens and nations, including the International Criminal Court, ICC, which put out a video condemning the statement, which appeared to be very violent in nature.
Apart from the condemnation from the ICC, and a few statements from the United States, US, Embassy in Nigeria, and others, reacting and clearing the air that they are not interfering in the internal political affairs of Nigeria, but are only here to observe the 2019 general elections, no tangible action has been taken against the Governor by the international community, since the government and party in power, the All Progressives Congress, APC, which the President, Muhammadu Buhari, belongs, can no longer be looked upon for drastic action against its erring Officials and members.
It is very important that this “body bags” comment made by the Governor does not get overlooked by the international community; something has to be done. At least, to serve as a deterrent to other Nigerian government Officials; to let them know that they cannot go about making violent statements recklessly, with no repercussions whatsoever.
This must be done and done quickly, because Nigeria is gradually becoming a very lawless and one-sided society, where anything goes for the government in power. A country where Amaechi’s tapes can get exposed, with him berating, mocking, and insulting the President, but no single action can be taken against him, for reasons best known to them. The same Amaechi can go to Rivers State and make violent statements in the middle of an election campaign, and still yet nothing is done. Even the President was accused of making violent statements during his campaign.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State was seen on several videos pocketing huge sums of dollars; all that was done, was that he ran to court to block his investigation, and also to block the whistle blower from releasing more videos of the very glaring corruption moves.
For this impunity to end, Governor El-Rufai must be punished, he must be the scapegoat among our so called Leaders, who act less than their positions.
Since the government in Nigeria under President Buhari cannot act, the international community must act; they must punish Governor El-Rufai, for threatening to kill their Officials, for making Nigeria appear unsafe for their Representatives here, for even harbouring such an evil thought of killing a fellow human being, and for being totally unapologetic for uttering such violent words.
Finally, the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, promised to ban Nigerian citizens, their family members in some cases, who behave violently during the 2019 general elections. Governor El-Rufai has shown even a greater violent behavior, and must not be overlooked.
