The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has said that amnesty for corrupt persons will not be a bad idea under his government, if he wins the 2019 Presidential election.
Atiku said this in a live television interview, titled: ‘The Candidates’, in Abuja, on Wednesday night.
The Moderator, Kadariah Ahmed, had asked Atiku if corrupt persons would be granted amnesty, if he becomes President.
The PDP candidate said: “Why not? I give you an example of Turkey. Turkey gave amnesty, and all the monies taken abroad were brought back, and the government said when you bring the money back, you do not need to pay taxes. Invest in manufacturing, technology, and real estate.
“And look at Turkey today. It is like any other European country today.”
Atiku disagreed with the Host, however, saying that, as one of the two main employers of labour in Adamawa State, he is not responsible for the perceived high poverty rate in the State.
He said that an individual is incapable of ending massive poverty.
Elsewhere, his running mate, Peter Obi, revealed that instead of being condemned, Atiku should be commended for being the only Presidential Candidate in Nigeria, who had not only made a success of his own life, but he is also an employer of labour, apart from the Adamawa State Government.
Also speaking, Atiku rated the All Progressives Congress, APC, government of President Muhammadu Buhari, low, saying that, although the APC met the GDP at 6 percent, when it took Office in 2015, the GDP now stands at 2 percent, four years after.
He also faulted the ruling APC on security and corruption, saying that, the administration has been unable to deliver on its promises to revive the economy, fight corruption, and address security.
Atiku described himself as ‘the most investigated Politician in Nigeria’, noting that, up until now, no one has convicted him of any crime.
His statement was in response to a question by a member of the audience, who read an excerpt from ex-President, Olusegun Obasanjo’s book, My Watch, in which he made allegations of corruption against his erstwhile Vice President, Atiku.
Obasanjo has since said that he has forgiven Atiku, noting that, although Atiku had his faults, he is the better of the two front line Presidential Candidates for the 2019 general elections.
You may recall, that the Candidates of the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari, and Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, had been on the same programme, some weeks ago, where the President could barely understand, nor provide any answers to most of the questions thrown at him by the Host. Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, who answered most of the questions thrown at the President, was also lacking answers at some point to some of the questions he was asked.
Unlike the APC Candidates, the PDP Candidates appeared fully prepared for the interview, and most importantly, to run Nigeria to greater heights; as they provided very intelligent answers to all the questions thrown at them, and earned applause from the audience for almost the entire interview.
